Actos Side Effects

Actos was approved by the FDA in 1999 and became one of the most popular drugs in the world for the treatment of type II diabetes. Unfortunately, drug experts have now warned that it may cause an increased risk of Actos side effects like bladder cancer, heart attacks and liver damage.

In early clinical trials of Actos, researchers discovered few minor side effects including:

  • Headaches
  • Blurred vision
  • Muscle pain and swollen joints
  • Tooth/mouth pain or sore throat
  • Nausea/vomiting/loss of appetite, and
  • Dark urine or jaundice of the skin or eyes

However, more serious Actos side effects were related to the drug after further testing ordered by the FDA, French Medicines Agency and European Medicines Agency.

On June 16, 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a warning that taking Actos for more than a year could increase the risk of bladder cancer. More recently, experts have linked the drug to heart attacks and liver damage.

If you have taken Actos and been affected by bladder cancer, heart attack or liver damage, it is important to speak with an attorney as soon as possible to learn your legal rights.  You may be entitled to substantial compensation to help with your condition.

According to FDA estimates, nearly 2 million patients took Actos for diabetes in 2010 alone. In a recent French study of 155,000 people taking the drug, it was discovered that those who took it for more than a year had a 40% increased risk of bladder cancer.

The finding of such serious Actos side effects were enough to prompt drug regulators in France and Germany to ban all sales of the drug pending further research into its dangers.

In the United States and the rest of Europe, however, the FDA and European Medicines Agency (EMA) have only issued warnings about the safety of Actos, leaving the drug on the market for doctors to prescribe.

Even though Actos remains on the market here in the United States, the manufacturer, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, is liable for any injuries caused. Attorneys with the Actos Litigation Group are currently filing lawsuits on behalf of those who have suffered bladder cancer, heart attack or liver damage after taking the drug. These same attorneys are available to discuss your case today.

You should never file a lawsuit unless you can show that another party caused your injury. However, an attorney can explain the research linking this drug to serious Actos side effects and how Takeda Pharmaceuticals has continued selling the drug despite knowing about its’ dangers.

Defective drug lawsuits can be rather complicated legal matters requiring a thorough investigation into medical records, testimony by researchers, extensive legal experience and significant resources to fight large drug companies.

Before choosing an actos attorney to help you, make sure they are qualified to handle this type of case, if they have experience fighting large drug companies and whether they have the resources to pursue your case as long as necessary to recover.
